On the Road: Tar Heel State

 

North Carolina was a large source of tar, pitch and turpentine for many years and around the time of the Civil War became known as the Tar Heel State and its inhabitants Tar Heelers.  Tar was used to coat the bottom of boats and a large amount was exported to England.  Initially, the term was a derogatory one, but later was adopted favorably as the state’s and its residents’ nickname.

We spent a week in North Carolina at Thanksgiving. We didn’t see any tar or turpentine, but did enjoy touring the Reynolda House in Winston-Salem, country home of A. J. Reynolds of tobacco fame and his wife Katharine.  Katharine was a very progressive woman for her time (1920’s) and she oversaw the building of the home, the creation of a school for the workers, and the beginnings of a village.  At one time, 300 families lived on the estate.  Unfortunately, she died in childbirth and barely spent any time here.   The house is impressive—bungalow style with an expansive main room featuring double staircases and an Aeolian organ plus garden rooms, porches, a jazzy red and white lower level bar cum entertainment space, and a stunningly gorgeous swimming pool!  The bungalow movement emphasized fresh air for good health and the porches and patios are designed to promote it. There are also extensive gardens, most of which were dormant, but a few rose blooms and cabbage heads remained and the conservatory showcased seasonal poinsettias and a few bromeliads.

The featured exhibit, The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement, 1887-1920, is a very pleasing collection of paintings.  Some familiar names here, Childe Hassam, for example, but mostly not works we’d seen anywhere else.  Organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, it is worth seeing.

 

Central North Carolina has a lot of clay and has been a locus for pottery since the 1700’s.  Seagrove, south of Greensboro, and the surrounding area abound with studios open to the public.  We were there the day before Thanksgiving so many studios were closed, but we took advantage of the North Carolina Pottery Center to get oriented and see samples of about 80 different potters’ work. We then visited three studios and vowed that we needed to return for a full day to leisurely tour the area.  As you can see, I prefer the more contemporary designs.

Bookstores for Book Lovers

I’m a longtime connoisseur of bookstores, particularly independent ones.  I have my favorites in the U.S. and even a few in the U.K.  In my opinion, a good bookstore smells of paper and ink, is light on the non-book miscellaneous merchandise (note cards are fine), has nooks and corners where you can linger and browse, offers a comfortable chair or two, and is laid out more like a maze than an array of aisles.

In Durham, we re-visited The Regulator Bookshop, a favorite haunt for at least 30 years. Located in the bustling 9th Street business corridor, The Regulator is scruffy in a good way.  There is a side room off the main area devoted to magazines and greeting cards, an open area with tables of books and books on shelves, a raised area for kids’ books, and a very welcoming long banquette. Many years ago, I spent several hours in that spot reading to my young son while our car was being repaired.  Downstairs, where once there was a coffee bar, there is now a space for events surrounded by used books and remainder titles.  Overall the store is inviting and always lively with readers of all ages.

A more recent addition to my list is McIntyre’s Books in Fearrington Village (near Chapel Hill) where for ten years or so, we’ve whiled away an occasional hour or two.  It’s more genteel than The Regulator which, considering its clientele of largely retirees, makes sense.  The store is carpeted and feels like being inside a home.  There are multiple rooms (one devoted to books for children through teens), another with a fireplace and comfy chairs, and yet another in the back packed with mystery books.  There are appealing displays of the latest titles and staff recommendations along with a focus on local and regional fiction and nonfiction.  I always find something to buy—usually too many “somethings!”

Book of the Week

I just finished Colum McCann’s latest work, Thirteen Ways of Looking, which is a collection of one novella and several short stories.  Not only is McCann an elegant stylist who makes every word count, he is accessible and witty and portrays his characters with compassion and understanding.  The title novella beautifully captures the thought processes and asides of a retired judge as he reflects on his career and negotiates lunchtime conversation with his favorite waiter and his fragile son.  And I thought the last story of a damaged nun, an outlier who is revisited by past trauma, was brilliant.  The New York Times included this title among its 100 notable books of the year.

New York: Wonderful Whitney

On our last full day in New York, we made our first visit to the new Whitney Museum of American Art (to give its full name). Now located in the Meatpacking District a short walk from our apartment, it is in a stunning new building by Renzo Piano. For anyone who is familiar with Renzo’s other work, there are some recurring elements: lots of glass, metal staircases both internal and external, a public space on the roof, and a creative use of natural light. [I take the liberty of using his first name since I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Renzo a bit in San Francisco and have visited him in both Paris and Genoa.] He was the architect for the California Academy of Sciences (2008) in Golden Gate Park and The Shard (2013) in London.

The lines for entry were long, but you can bypass them if you buy your tickets online or, like we did, buy a membership. With all the time we plan to spend in New York, it seemed a wise investment.

 

 

 

 

An exhibit of works by Frank Stella had just opened and we did that first. Colorful paintings and almost ornate sculptures, sometimes of found objects, dominated the galleries. These were all large works. Outside were several complex star sculptures, one metal and one made of wood.

The museum overlooks the High Line so while outside you can gaze down and watch the never-ending stream of casual walkers, commuters, and tourists.

The other exhibit we spent time in was a retrospective of the works of Archibald Motley (1891-1981), an African American artist who painted the jazz scene as well as portraits of black society, both high and low, in 1920’s and 30’s Chicago. I had never heard of Motley nor seen any of his works and was drawn in by the intensity of his images and his use of strong vibrant, almost neon, colors. Unfortunately for me, the works I wanted to photograph were the ones where no photos were permitted.  But here is an example I found on the web.

Book of the Week

The Wall St. Journal reviewed it several weeks ago and the NY Times this past Sunday. The book is Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family by Amy Ellis Nutt. This is the absorbing, painful account of one young boy’s journey to becoming a female. Wyatt was one of two identical twins adopted by Kelly and Wayne Maines. From the age of two, Wyatt, unlike his brother Jonas, preferred dolls and girlish things. In a few years, he began to articulate his dislike of his “male parts” and his preference for female clothes and referred to himself as a “girl boy.” Eventually his parents allowed him to legally change his name.

This book is as much her parents’ story as it is Nicole’s. Her mother was tirelessly supportive, preparing teachers for her then son’s differences, getting him into counseling, seeking appropriate medical help, and then being there for Nicole to ensure her safety and emotional well-being as she outwardly and publicly became more of a girl. For her father, who envisioned teaching both his sons to hunt and shoot (pastimes he enjoyed growing up), the journey was a struggle and he left a lot of it to his wife. Over the course of Nicole’s growing up (she is now college age), society evolved and there is the beginning of greater acceptance of transgender individuals. Some of this change is due to a lawsuit filed by the Maines. All parenting brings a set of challenges, but these parents had an especially complex situation to navigate. Nutt’s inclusion of the latest studies on gender identity is helpful contextual information.

On the Road: Overdosing on Art

After an absence of several years, we returned to Philadelphia for a friend’s birthday party. We were blessed with mostly overcast skies and comfortable temperatures—perfect for all the walking we planned to do. We did walk a lot one day, but mostly we gorged on art. In two days, we visited three art museums and re-appreciated how much this historic city has to offer.

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts was the first stop. This museum and school is the oldest of its kind in the country and was established in 1805. Philadelphia was a cultural center even then, known for a time as the “Athens of America” and from 1790 to 1800 served as the nation’s capital. As you might expect, therefore, there are paintings and sculptures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and John Paul Jones by the likes of Charles Wilson Peale and Gilbert Stuart, along with marble statues of figures from the classics such as one of Penelope by Rinaldo Rinaldi done in 1851.

What was equally, if not more appealing, was the Academy’s theming of several of the galleries. One, entitled “Women’s Work,” contained an array of paintings from different periods each depicting a woman doing something domestic—laundry, sweeping, etc. The artists were mostly male, but there was one painting by Mary Cassatt.

We also had fun in the large gallery hung “salon style,” a practice begun in France long ago. Here the walls were covered with paintings from down low to high up and none of them had any labels! A cheat sheet on the bench enabled us to zero in on works we particularly liked to see who was the artist. And here and there the galleries had some contemporary works, works by current or former students. Today there are about 300 fulltime students.

It was the last weekend for a large Impressionism exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and this was a must. Even with tickets purchased ahead for the first time slot in the morning, we had to wait in line about 15 minutes to get into the exhibit. This exhibit focused on works that were acquired and exhibited by Paul Durand-Ruel. He appreciated what the Impressionists were doing and was instrumental in both buying and exhibiting their work and in fostering their acceptance and later success. I found this perspective fascinating and was pleased to see a number of Impressionist paintings I had never seen before—works by Monet, Pissarro, and Sisley, among others.

That afternoon, we made a return visit to the Barnes Foundation, also on Philadelphia’s grand parkway. After seeing salon style in the Pennsylvania Academy gallery, we were re-calibrated for Barnes’ version. His combines many paintings on each wall, but graced with the addition of metal hardware such as hinges and door pulls above and furniture, small chests or tables bearing vases or candlesticks, below. Since our last visit, the Barnes now offers an audio guide which we opted to take. With its focus on one or two paintings per gallery, I felt much less overwhelmed by the sheer number of paintings on display. And I liked the fact that often the curators spoke about the paintings on either side of the featured one which gave me, the viewer, a slight peek into Barnes’ rationale for his ordering of the works.

It was also noteworthy that several works on display were ones that Durand-Ruel had either purchased or tried over many years to acquire. Lots and lots of Renoirs, some Cezannes, early Picassos, a number of Matisses, and also works by Americans such as Glackens. A very rich collection indeed and, somewhat ironically, given Mr. Barnes’ strictures which were in effect for many years, now you can buy reproductions in the form of postcards, note cards, and prints for framing!

We had tasty tapas at Tinto and a good lunch at the restrainedly beautiful Granite Hill in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

And there’s Dilworth Park.  We loved this addition to the cityscape! This new plaza surrounding city hall pulses with a grid of jetting fountains, serves up a café aptly named Sips, and invites slowing down with its stripes of green lawn. The whole is punctuated by jolts of color—electric blue, hot pink, and spring green—in the form of metal café tables and elegant slatted chairs.

IMG_7221There was even a very friendly and helpful city greeter! Overall a vibrant urban space that invites you to stop–study the soaring skyline, people watch, or just appreciate the ornate beauty of city hall.

Puritan Boston and Quaker Philadelphia by Digby Baltzell and published in 1979.  Note, he coined the term WASP for White Anglo Saxon Protestant.

Tidy Tidbits: Sea Creatures & Wars

SHARKS AND SEAHORSES

This week we spent a fascinating morning at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium.  There is an attractive color brochure with a map. And blue-shirted volunteers were all around and engaged with visitors, particularly at the Contact Cove where you can do a two-finger touch of sea stars and other animals.  Also noteworthy, I thought were the one-page glossary handouts of fish and invertebrate names in three different languages:  French, German, and Spanish, designed for foreign visitors.

ContactCoveExhibits are both indoors and outside and feature deep sea fish as well as coast dwellers.  Scientists here focus much of their research on white sharks and seahorses.  We saw an impressive shark tank where there are live shark training demonstrations several times a week and also made note of the several kinds of seahorses in the regular exhibits and near the lab.  What looked to be hundreds of teeny tiny seahorses born several weeks ago were clustered around a leaf stalk in one tank. and another tank had other baby seahorses farther along in their development.  They are amazing creatures who can camouflage themselves to blend into their particular sea environment.

 

JellyfishI was particularly drawn to the tanks of jellyfish and the sea nettles (the latter I’d never seen before).  I find watching jellyfish float and drift in the currents to be very soothing, almost therapeutic.  The mangrove display outside emphasized the critical role this tree-like shrub plays in reducing shore erosion and providing safe havens for various creatures.  We will definitely make a return visit, most likely with our granddaughter in tow!

 

 

 

 

 

WHAT I’M WATCHING 

I’m really impressed with the offerings on PBS this summer.  Not only is there the new version of Poldark, but Last Tango in Halifax is back for a third season of the trials and tribulations of Celia and Alan and their tangled up families.  One aspect of this program I like and appreciate is that there is a lot of conversation in it, but there are silences too, and it all feels more like real life than some television dramas. Also there are moments of humor.

Added to this line-up on Sunday evenings (here you can watch from 8:00 until 11:00 pm if you’re so inclined; we record everything) is The Crimson Field, a raw and graphic drama set at a battlefield hospital in Boulogne, France in 1915.  The story focuses on three new volunteer nurses and their interactions with the nursing supervisors, doctors and patients.  And for fans of Downton Abbey, watch for Kevin Doyle (aka Molesley) in a very different role.  Overall, it’s strong stuff, definitely “mature content,” replete with rivalries and turf wars, and exceedingly well done.

WHAT I’M READING

This is the time of year when I give myself permission to read more fluff, or shall we say, less serious literature.  Recently, it was The Memory of Violets by Hazel Gaynor and At the Water’s Edge, the newest novel from Sara Gruen of Water for Elephants.  Gaynor’s book is a historical novel about two sisters who are flower sellers in 19th century London.  Their lives intersect nearly 40 years later with a young housemother at a home that trains girls to make paper flowers.  I enjoy historical novels in general and this one presents a slice of society of which I knew very little.

Somehow I’ve escaped reading any of Gruen’s previous commercially successful novels.  At the Water’s Edge is set in 1944 at an inn near Loch Ness in the Scottish highlands.  The three principal characters are spoiled, rich, hapless young Americans from Philadelphia on a quest to redeem themselves by recording the famous monster.  Maddie, wife of one of the two men, has a checkered family history, and has never done anything for herself.  Living in spartan accommodations with strict food rationing in place, she is forced to face her own self-centeredness and the true state of her marriage.

I found the whole premise a bit farfetched and initially had little sympathy for her or Ellis and Hank.  Nonetheless, I did keep reading and was absorbed enough in finding out whether anyone got what he or she deserved to read to the end.
